Benefit of Material to Systems Application
Carbon steel pipe is the most commonly used material for fire protection systems. It has provided reliable service since the development of the first fire protection system. Carbon steel pipe is readily available and economically priced compared to other materials, resulting in lower material costs and requires no special handling. In situations with acidity or in corrosive environments, stainless steel is a good alternative.
System Application and Material Usage
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) allows the use of carbon steel pipe for fire protection systems with a minimum wall thickness for various pipe sizes identified. Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) also have evaluated lighter wall thicknesses and Listed/Approved them for Fire Protection systems in accordance with NFPA 13.
Typical fire protection systems are wet, dry, deluge, and pre-action. Wet systems are typically installed in temperature controlled environments while dry systems can be used in heated and non-heated environments. Fire protection systems are typically static systems and not subjected to high pressures or water hammer while in a ready state.
Carbon steel pipe is available in typical fire protection sizes of ½" – 12" and is also available in larger sizes where necessary. The mechanical properties of carbon steel pipe and its high burst pressures make it suitable in all fire protection systems. A key advantage of steel is its ability to be formed, bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations.
Steel pipe is available in a variety of wall thicknesses with "light wall" or "standard wall" being the most common for use in fire protection. The static nature of the fluid and the minimal introduction of fresh oxygen into the systems have led to great system longevity and the use of light wall steel pipe choices thinner than schedule 10 .
Steel pipe may be installed using a variety of joining methods including grooved, welded, flanged, threaded and other mechanical joining methods. Grooved and threaded are the most common methods for joining fire protection piping.
