Benefit of Material to Systems Application
CPVC pipe has been specifically designed and listed/approved for use in sprinkler systems and offers advantages in initial cost and ease of installation over traditional steel sprinkler piping systems. It is lightweight, easy to cut, and requires no expensive tools for installation. CPVC pipe, with its smooth interior surface, offers increased hydraulic capabilities over steel, which often permits the pipe to be downsized. It does not rust, is resistant to rust scale and is easily repaired or modified. CPVC fire sprinkler pipe is listed for use in areas such as residential, office spaces, nursing homes, schools, and the like.
System Application and Material Usage
CPVC fire sprinkler pipe is available in SDR 13.5 (Standard Dimension Ratio) wall thicknesses. SDR dimensions means that the pipe wall thickness is proportional to the outside diameter and that all sizes of pipe are rated for the same pressure. Fire protection systems commonly use CPVC pipe in sizes ¾ inch through 3 inch, and the pipe is rated for 175 psi at 150°F.
CPVC pipe meets the dimensional and testing requirements of ASTM F 442. It is also NSF-PW listed for use in potable water making it useable in combined plumbing/fire sprinkler systems. CPVC pipe can be used in residential and light hazard occupancies according to NFPA 13, 13R, and 13D. The proper methods for its use are given by the applicable fire sprinkler standard, NFPA 13, 13R, 13D, the UL Listings or FM Approval, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Care must be taken to prevent contact with incompatible products which may cause damage to CPVC. Information from each manufacturer must be consulted to determine the product’s limitations. One-step solvent cement is used to join pipe, fittings, and adapters. Adapters are available for connecting to threaded, flanged or grooved piping systems.
