Benefit of Material to Systems Application
The use of carbon steel pipe on water conveying systems has been a very common practice all over the world for over 100 years, and is still the most common material choice for this application. Carbon steel pipe is globally available in a wide range of grades, sizes, wall thicknesses, lengths, and can also be provided pre-insulated. Carbon steel pipe is economically priced compared to other non-ferrous materials, resulting in lower material costs and requires no special handling.
It can be used in any building utilizing chilled water systems and is accepted as a material for piping systems in all mechanical codes. Carbon steel pipe has high tensile strength and internal pressure ratings, making it useful in high rise buildings as well as low rise buildings such as schools, hospitals, and office complexes.
The only situations in which carbon steel is not a preferred material would be systems with potentially corrosive, acidic water or when long-term durability is desired and there is concern that current water treatment levels may not be maintained.
System Application and Material Usage
Carbon steel’s combination of mechanical properties and characteristics continue to make it a first choice for chilled water applications. A key advantage to steel is its ability to be rolled, formed, bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations. The elongation properties of steel allow it to withstand stresses and strains without breaking under shocks from surges, water hammer and other man-made disturbances. Longer lengths enable faster and more economical installations. Numerous flushing chemicals as well as other chemical treatments are available to ensure corrosion free service in chilled water systems. Systems utilizing steel pipe can be used with water/glycol mixtures to maintain the operating conditions.
Steel pipe is available in a variety of wall thicknesses with "standard wall" being the most common for use in chilled water systems. The system working pressure and pipe joining method will determine the required pipe wall thickness for each application. Steel pipe may be installed using a variety of joining methods including grooved, welded, flanged, threaded and other mechanical joining methods.
