Benefit of Material to Systems Application
Strength and durability are probably the most useful properties of galvanized steel when referring to storm water systems. Storm water pipes can be installed in areas where the pipe is likely to be bumped around or run into by various objects or vehicles. Steel pipe is able to deal with high force impacts without cracking or breaking, making it useful in dangerous areas. The chemical resistance provided by the zinc coating can also be very useful when the pipe is installed in corrosive environments. It is somewhat expensive when compared to plastic pipe such as PVC both in material and installation costs. Another disadvantage is the tendency for steel pipe to scale up on the inside after a number of years. This decreases the diameter of the pipe and reduces flow.
System Application and Material Usage
Galvanized steel has found use in many different storm water applications. Many auto factories use galvanized to pipe the water from the roof drains down to the storm sewer. These pipes will typically run down next to support beams or walls in the building. The use of galvanized steel pipe allows for exposed storm water lines because the steel can hold up to impacts associated with factory work (workers, carts, forklifts, etc.). For use in storm water systems, galvanized pipe is typically connected with grooved couplings; however, galvanized pipe may also be threaded or flanged. Many health hazards are associated with welding of galvanized pipe, therefore welding is not a common joining method and flanges must be threaded onto galvanized pipe or welded onto the pipe prior to it being galvanized.
