Benefit of Material to Systems Application
The use of carbon steel pipe on condenser water conveying systems has been a very common practice all over the world for many years. Carbon steel’s combination of economics, physical properties and characteristics continue to make it a good choice for condenser water applications. It is accepted as a material for condenser water piping in all mechanical codes. Only in corrosive environments would any other material be used. Carbon steel pipe has high tensile strength and internal pressure ratings, making it useful in high rise buildings as well as low rise buildings such as schools, hospitals, and office complexes.
System Application and Material Usage
Carbon steel’s combination of mechanical properties and characteristics continue to make it a first choice for condenser water applications. A key advantage to steel is its ability to be rolled, formed, bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations. The elongation properties of steel allow it to withstand stresses and strains without breaking under shocks from surges, water hammer and other man-made disturbances. Longer lengths enable faster and more economical installations. Chemical treatment is recommended to ensure corrosion free service.
Steel pipe is available in a variety of wall thicknesses with "standard wall" being the most common for use in condenser water systems. The system working pressure and pipe joining method will determine the required pipe wall thickness for each application. Steel pipe may be installed using a variety of joining methods including grooved, welded, flanged, threaded and other mechanical joining methods.
