Benefit of Material to Systems Application

Carbon steel pipe is the most common material for conveying hot water in hydronic heating systems.  It can be used in any building utilizing hydronic heating, and is accepted as a material for heating water piping in all mechanical codes. Carbon steel pipe has high tensile strength and internal pressure ratings, making it useful in high rise buildings as well as institutional buildings such as schools, hospitals, and office complexes.

System Application and Material Usage

Steel’s combination of mechanical properties and characteristics continue to make it a first choice for hydronic heating applications. Systems would typically use copper tubing in sizes less than 1” and in individual coil units, air handling units or VAV boxes, where copper’s higher cost is less of an issue and its superior heat conduction is most advantageous.

Working with carbon steel pipe can be expensive compared to copper, due to the variety of fittings and equipment needed for installation. A key advantage to steel is its ability to be formed, bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations. The elongation properties of steel allow it to withstand stresses and strains without breaking under shocks from surges, water hammer and other man-made disturbances. Longer lengths enable faster and more economical installations.

Numerous flushing chemicals as well as other chemical treatments are available to ensure corrosion free service in hydronic heating systems. Systems utilizing steel pipe can be used with water/glycol mixtures to maintain the system operating conditions.

Steel pipe is available in a variety of wall thicknesses with "standard wall" being the most common for use in heating water systems. The system working pressure and pipe joining method will determine the required pipe wall thickness for each application.

Steel pipe can be installed using a variety of joining methods including grooved, welded, flanged, threaded and other mechanical joining methods.
