Benefit of Material to Systems Application
The characteristics of copper tubing have proven it to be an excellent and economical choice for use in heating water systems. However, carbon steel is the most popular material for hydronic heating water at standard sizes. Systems would then typically switch to copper tube under 1” and in individual coil units, air handling units or Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, where cost is less of an issue and copper’s superior heat conduction is most advantageous.
System Application and Material Usage
Copper tubing has a wide variety of sizes to meet the needs of a wide range of applications; however the sizes used most for hydronic heating piping range from 1/4" through 12", though economics usually limit its use to up to 6" or 8". Hydronic heating systems are typically installed with ASTM B 88 Type L or Type M tubing; Type K is reserved for high pressure riser or buried applications where its increased strength and wall thickness are required.
Joints may be soldered, brazed, roll grooved for use with a mechanical coupling, flanged, or other mechanical joining methods such as push and crimp type.
